The Believers

After hurdling some obstacles with my first grade class, we are finally starting to settle into a fabulous routine.  I already feel like this school year is going by too fast, and I want it to last longer.  I am absolutely enjoying these children and the joy that they add to my life.  I think Josh is jealous of the time and energy that I put into thinking about these kiddos.  Last week, I decided that it was time for our class to come up with a team name.  I wrote down every idea that they had on the board, so that we could vote.  It ranged from the kitty cats, to the readers, to The Bears, and everything in between.  The boys liked the idea of having a sports team name.  We narrowed the choices down, and voted a few times...our class is now named THE BELIEVERS.  The student who gave this idea said, "I think that we should be The Believers, because you are always teaching us to believe in ourselves."  Wow!  What a statement and what a TENDER MERCY!  If these kiddos could take ONE thing away from this school year, what a blessing it would be that they could understand their potential, and believe in themselves.

    Sarah I think that is so awesome. There is nothing better than kids knowing that they can be amazing and believe that they are worth every struggle they go through. You go girl. What an awesome teacher those kids have.

    You are indeed a blessing in the lives of these children at this time in their lives. As you know, belief in ones self is one of the greatest blessings to give and receive! I watch the way the children look at you and you are indeed their teacher, their example, the believer in them. That they can succeed in anything they do! That you believe in them!

On Wednesday, May 18th, I woke up with a sore throat.  I didn't have much of a voice either.  Josh got Samuel up and mentioned that Samuel had been coughing a bit.  I thought to myself, 'here we go again'.  I swear we haven't been able to catch a break from sickness or injury this year. While I was getting ready for the day, Samuel walked into my bathroom.  He started coughing a bunch and then choking.  I didn't know that he had shared a doughnut with Daddy right before he walked in to see me.  The doughnut had walnuts sprinkled on top.  I thought he was about to throw up (I didn't realize he was choking on a walnut).  So I immediately held him over the sink.  After not breathing for a short second or two, he coughed out a small bit of food (aka. the walnut).  The moment was tense, but I was relieved when he was breathing and acting normal again.  Our morning routine continued and I quickly forgot about the intense choking mo...

Growing Up

If you were to ask me what I constantly struggle with... it is CHANGE .   I find comfort in schedules, routines and expectations that periods of my life have to offer.  Whenever I turn the page to a new chapter in my life, I am faced with a great sense of insecurity and hesitation.  Now that I am crossing through a new threshold, I've realized that I still haven't grown up. I taught for two years and just finished my last day of school on the 7th.  I am leaving something behind that I am very passionate about... TEACHING .  It is hard for me to let go of the known and step out into the unknown.  I was very prayerful about my decision to become a  mommy and have the time to stay at home.  This is what I have always wanted and I know that it is the right decision for our family.  But it doesn't make the transition easy.  I put so much work and time into teaching and let's be honest... a whole lotta heart.  I spent our last few min...

This Is His Journey

I have been impressed to share some thoughts and experiences that have occurred in my life recently.  A few weeks after Adriaan was born, Josh and I were called to privately meet with his pediatrician.  She had addressed her concerns over the phone, but wanted to talk to us in person.  Adriaan's newborn screenings and later blood tests showed that Adriaan has Cystic Fibrosis.  We quickly researched what CF is and tried to grasp what this meant for our lives.  The State set up a 'sweat test' at Primary Children's Medical Center the following day.  Since we weren't given much notice, Josh wasn't able to attend.  I showed up holding my sweet baby boy, with fear in my heart.  "Isn't this where sick babies go?  Isn't this where children fight for their lives?" I asked myself.  "I don't want this place to be a part of MY LIFE."  They call the sweat test a 'gold standard test' which doctors use to diagnose if a patient has CF bas...
